Apple tech support sucks in Belgium

After having sent in my Macbook Pro Core Duo 1 in for repairs last year, with a broken motherboard, I was sort of pissed since it took 3 weeks to get back to me. I had to rent another machine to be able to continue development since I was heavily using Parallels. I easily got over it though, since I knew it was the first revision of the hardware platform and that there were bound to be problems like this.

Anyway, when the Macbook Pro Core Duo 2 was released at the end of 2006, I decided to get one. The much improved ventilation (virtually silent), more ram, a faster CPU and a glossy screen were too tempting to pass on. It's been a smooth ride, until the day before yesterday!

I was happily working when all of a sudden, the Mac Gray Screen of Death slowly slides from top to bottom. Yeah, I've been having them so frequently over the past two years, that they can start competing with Windows' Blue version. As usual, I do a hard reboot and ... nothing. Screen stays black, no startup chime, nothing works. I tried everything, resetting the PMU and PRAM, starting from a DVD, starting from another volume, using target disk mode, ... nothing. I call Apple Support, they make me do it all again while being on the phone, surprisingly the results are the same (another hour lost), and they tell me that I have to bring it into an official repair center.

I really dislike this new policy where you have to bring a laptop yourself to a store, even when you have bought the additional Apple Care support. A few years ago, they at least had FedEx pick it up at your place. Now, the burden is on you.

So, I drive over to the nearest qualified store (doPi in Mons, 35 kms from where I live) and drop off the machine. Yesterday was spent setting everything back up with my 'old' Core Duo 1 machine.

This morning the phone rings, it's the store where I left my Macbook Pro. They tell me that they're being put out of business by the state and that I have to hurry to pick up my machine, otherwise I wouldn't be able to recuperate it. So I drive back to them and then to another store in Brussels.

Bottom line, I drove 150 kms today and 70 kms the day before yesterday, just to hand over my machine for repairs ... 6 months after I bought it, and while having an extended Apple Care warranty.

Thats pitiful, is there any other way you can send it out besides taking it to the Apple store, or are you SOL? :(
Re: Apple tech support sucks in Belgium
ugh that does suck..happy I have a dell, although I use it less then you use your mac, so its hard to compare I guess...
Re: Apple tech support sucks in Belgium
Not to worry! Apple is in the process of opening up retail stores all across Europe! Go to ifoapplestore.com to look further.

Love,
The United States

Sorry. Always a pain. And thanks for the info that Dopi is gone. Their Brussels store has been closed for ....

I get my Mac serviced (extremely well) at ARC Repair Centre (www.arcict.com) just outside Brussels in Dilbeek. ... They have been excellent and I bought my Mac overseas - not in Belgium. No receipt needed .. they get all details online.
Re: Apple tech support sucks in Belgium
i hear ya on this. i can't win with my macbook pro. and finding a knowlegable person is impossilb.e so, leeads me to this question...does anyone know where i can get a 3g data card for the macbook pro? I confused the guy at the mac store by using that phrase. seems that Vodaphone is the only one who makes a compatible product. any ideas?
Re: Apple tech support sucks in Belgium
I think that the people at MacLine Belgium are pretty knowledgeable, you could give them a ring.
Re: Apple tech support sucks in Belgium
Yes, well, even ARC has it's problems when it comes to repairs.

Anyway, doPi seems to be in some unfavourble position, and checking out the number of employees they had recently... not a good choice.

Best bet: http://www.switchshops.be/
but besides that, the most in-depth repairs will end up at ARC anyway. Even the doPi ones. And by god, you'll have a motherboard replacement. (did that sound cynical? Sorry!)

Anyway, you have your garantee, so whatever store you knock on the door, they should help you out. Cami is located in Brussels also. Send me a mail if things still don't work out.
Re: Apple tech support sucks in Belgium
Geert, you were lucky, here in Italy, when my Macbook died, I drove 350kms to repair it!
Re: Apple tech support sucks in Belgium
Got 10 years experience in maintaining Mac equipment and have both Mac and PC in the office. Neither are great for suppport but usually Macs require about 30% less maintenance. If you buy new you must get Apple support.

Mentioned above, go with ARC. Cami and some of the others are official Apple suppliers but have a massive waitinng list.
Buy online from Apple direct, they givvee themselves pref. if you have Apple Support.

For certain, I will never move to PC. It is worse and they don't last as long especially if you have heavy software.

Generally speaking most computer equipment goes wrong within the first 3 months of buying it or just after the 3 yr warranty (in particular Dell equipment). Dell servers are great very reliable though. Never buy first generation equipment when it comes out. Wait to see the blogs and feedback. When they iron it out then go and buy.

For tech advice, forget Cami go to Macline. If that doesn't work, call the UK where they are far more knowleagable and buy here.

All laptops when frequently used are eventually a disaster . . . are as far as I'm concerned.

But this is just my experience. Prob doesn't help now but maybe for the future.

You have to be REAL careful when it comes to services in these locations. Be polite but firm. Keep on your toes at all times, especial if a foreigner. Get receipts and clear commitments.
